Why I Call Them Micro K-Tips (Not “Invisible” K-Tips)

You may have seen the term “Invisible K-Tips” online. I personally don’t use that term because it can be misleading.Keratin bonds aren’t invisible. What makes them less noticeable is the bond size and how they’re placed.
That’s why I call them Micro K-Tips.
Micro K-Tips are traditional keratin fusion extensions, but the bonds are about one-third the size of a standard K-tip bond. Smaller bonds allow for better blending, more flexibility, and a more natural look at the root.
It’s not about the name, it’s about the technique.
Why Some People Say “Invisible”
When people say “invisible,” they’re usually referring to spacing, not the bond itself.
There are two placement options:
Spaced Placement - Small sections of natural hair are left between bonds. This allows the hair to fall over the bonds and soften the look. It creates a more natural flow but slightly less density.
Back-to-Back Placement - Bonds are installed next to each other with no spacing. This creates a fuller, denser install with more volume.
Neither is wrong. It depends on what you want — softer and lighter, or fuller and thicker.
This Installation
For this client, we installed:
150 grams
20-inch curly hair
Micro-sized keratin bonds
Spaced placement for a softer blend (per her request)
Because of the density and curl customization, the install took about 3.5 hours.150 grams gives a full look, especially with curly hair, while spacing keeps it natural.
About Hair Health
I also get asked a lot about damage.
With any extension method, there’s always a possibility of stress to the natural hair. That doesn’t automatically mean damage will happen, but it depends on maintenance, at-home care, heat use, how long the extensions are worn, there are a number of factors that can influence damage.
I recommend wearing Micro K-Tips for 3–4 months before removal. While some people wear them longer, I prefer that timeframe to reduce excess tension as your hair grows out. As new growth comes in, each bond is supported by fewer strands of hair, which increases weight on the root.
I’m always honest about this so clients can choose what works best for their lifestyle and hair goals. Some people prioritize fullness and long wear. Others prioritize growth and minimal tension. Everyone is different.
