How I Install My Microlinks (Single vs. Double Bead)

In this video, I’m showing exactly how I install my microlink extensions and explaining the different placement options.

There isn’t just one way to install microlinks. Some of it comes down to client preference, but I always explain what I recommend and why.

Single vs. Double Bead Placement

There are two ways I secure microlinks:

  • Single Bead - I typically use single beads around the outer layer and perimeter. This keeps the hair more flexible and less noticeable, especially for styling or pulling the hair back.

  • Double Bead - In the interior sections, I usually use double beads for a stronger hold. This reduces slippage and fallout between maintenance appointments. It’s especially helpful for clients with finer hair because it provides better grip without adding tension. Nano Link Extensions can also be double beaded.

Maintenance is generally recommended every 6–8 weeks, but double beading helps minimize slipping in between visits.

Adjusting for Tender Scalps

If a client is tender-headed, I can slightly adjust the placement by leaving a small amount of space between the scalp and the bead. This keeps the install secure while reducing unnecessary tension.

Why I Leave a Small Portion of the Tip Exposed

When installing, I leave a small portion of the extension tip above the bead instead of pushing it fully inside. This makes maintenance easier, helps preserve the integrity of the tip, and allows the hair to be reused if desired. Crushing the entire tip into the bead can make reinstallation harder later. If you’re getting new hair each time, this isn’t as important. But for clients reusing their hair, it makes a difference.

Maintenance & Wear Time

Clients can come in every 6–8 weeks for maintenance, or wear the install for about 3–4 months, depending on hair growth. After 3 months, it’s considered a new installation. The beads are removed and everything is reinstalled, either with the same hair (if it’s still in good condition) or with a new set.

The video below shows exactly how I install and why I make the choices I do.
