Maintenance Matters

It’s important to shampoo and condition your extensions regularly.
How often depends on:
Your natural hair type
The extension method you’re wearing
Your lifestyle
For some people, that may be once or twice a week. For others, it may be every two to three weeks.
Extensions are not attached to your scalp, so they don’t receive natural oils the way your natural hair does. Because of that, they need added moisture to prevent dryness and tangling, especially if they are color-treated or were purchased pre-colored.
Shampooing is important because it removes buildup from styling products, sweat, and natural debris that naturally accumulate while wearing extensions. If extensions aren’t cleansed properly, they can start to feel heavy, dry, or harder to manage.
It’s also important to condition your extensions regularly and incorporate a deep conditioning mask when needed to keep them hydrated.
Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your extensions, it also protects your natural hair.
Shampoo & Conditioner I’m Currently Feeling
For shampoo and conditioner, one set I’m currently liking is Redken All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner.
It’s formulated with argan oil and works well for dry or brittle hair. It gently cleanses while adding moisture and softness without weighing the hair down. I especially like it for extensions because it improves manageability and leaves the hair feeling smooth and hydrated.
It’s safe for color-treated hair and works well for fine to medium textures that need moisture.
There are plenty of great shampoos for extensions, this is just one I’m currently using and seeing good results with.
Products I’m Currently Liking
Verb Ghost Oil
Verb Ghost Oil is a lightweight oil that smooths frizz and adds shine without weighing the hair down.
It helps:
Tame flyaways
Add light moisture
Boost shine
Provide light heat protection
It’s infused with moringa oil and works well on most extension types, especially on the mid-lengths and ends when they start to feel dry.
Mizani 25 Miracle Milk Leave-In Conditioner
This is a lightweight leave-in that works especially well for curly or textured extension hair.
It helps:
Detangle
Soften
Reduce frizz
Add hydration
Protect against heat
It’s infused with coconut oil and doesn’t contain drying alcohols, which makes it great for maintaining moisture without heaviness.
UNITE 7SECONDS Detangler
One of my favorite detanglers.
It makes the hair easier to manage and helps reduce breakage from brushing. It contains panthenol for moisture and hydrolyzed rice protein to help strengthen the hair.
It also provides heat and UV protection, which is helpful for color-treated or chemically processed extension hair.
Final Thoughts
With extensions, less is more. Heavy oils and thick creams can cause buildup around beads or bonds. Lightweight, moisture-focused products tend to work best.
Wearing extensions is one thing...maintaining them properly is what keeps them looking good and helps protect your natural hair.
If you’re unsure what products or wash schedule are right for your specific method, feel free to ask during your appointment or book a consultation to go over a maintenance plan.
